What if you could end your sessions without any mental baggage to carry for the rest of the day?
Sound like a stretch?
Well, I'm going to show you two habits that when used correctly, can get those results for your game.

Elliot Roe - Mental Game Coach and Hypnotherapist
Let me introduce myself...
My name is Elliot Roe.
I'm a mental game coach and hypnotherapist who specializes in helping poker players and athletes achieve maximum performance.
I've worked with over 200 poker players one on one, and thousands more have downloaded at least one of my Mental Game MP3s.
In MMA I've worked with UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw, and 2013 MMA Coach of the Year Duane "Bang" Ludwig.
No that's out of the way...
let's work on your game!
When I started working with poker players I wanted to figure out the best way I could help my clients tilt less, focus more , and eliminate post session anxiety.
More importantly I wanted to find a way they could do it on their own, with minimal effort and a small time commitment.
To figure it out I studied some of the highest performing athletes and competitors in the world to see how they were able to obtain and maintain a winning mindset.
Elite Competitors Use Two Routines to Perform Their Best
The first is having a set of pre game routines or habits that they use before a game or match…or even before big moments in the middle of the competition.
The clearest example is Rafael Nadal, who is arguably the greatest tennis player of all time.
His routines go so far that many people just think of them as strange superstitions.
Here is one of his routines:
Seems Crazy Right?
While it might be a little bit over the top, it serves a specific purpose.
Here’s a quote from him on the subject:
Rafael Nadal
What he’s saying is that the routine puts his mind in a position for optimal performance.
Pro athletes aren’t the only competitors who use routines to improve mental performance.
Josh Waitzkin, the child chess prodigy and subject of the book and movie “Searching for Bobby Fisher” wrote about this practice in his book “The Art of Learning”
(which if you haven’t read it already is a MUST read for any poker player)
He describes the routine as “The Trigger” and says:
Once the routine is internalized, it can be used before any activity and a similar state of mind will emerge.
Josh Waitzkin
He credits his pre competition rituals as a huge part of his success in chess, and vital to him winning a martial arts world championship later in life.
The Next Routine Elite Competitors Used Was a Post Game Cool Down With An Extreme Focus On Rest and Recovery
This simplest example for this concept would be professional weightlifters.
The secret to their success isn't working out each muscle everyday, but in implementing a proper recovery protocol.
Once they lift heavy with one muscle group, they give it a chance to fully recover before lifting again, sometimes waiting as long as a week.
Just imagine you were trying to improve your bench press.
If you went in everyday and tried to do your max weight you wouldn’t get any stronger, as the recovery is when muscles grow.
Not only that, you would end up seriously hurting yourself, preventing yourself from working out at all
Most Poker Players are Doing Exactly This To Their Minds!
It’s no wonder so many poker players become burned out on the game, when most never take steps to prevent it.
Once I realized the power of these two routines I implemented it as a top recommendation in my coaching practice.
How You Can Add These Routines to Your Game
This activity should be something that compliments a good poker mindset, such as meditation, studying specific game concepts, or listening to calming music.
While in theory you could create a routine of eating a Big Mac Meal and slurping down a huge soda that would likely cause more harm than good.
A proper post game cool down for poker is something that reflects on the positives you just accomplished and removes all the unresolved stresses and emotions.
If you find yourself obsessing over a hand for hours after a session, or a bad session tends to ruin the rest of your day, this is because your cool down routine is either non-existent or non-effective.
Studying key hands you just played taking notes on what you should focus on in tomorrow’s session often works well.
Exercise, Yoga, and Meditation are also fantastic ways to disconnect from the game and allow your mind the time it needs to recover.
What I just gave you is the exact advice I give all my private clients, and it works amazingly well for those who are able to implement it into their games.
Creating These Habits and Routines Isn’t Always Easy
A player might get really into it for a week, but then quickly fall back into their old habits of just firing up tables without thought, and ending sessions with no way to relax.
For these principles to work the habits need to be second nature.
I wanted to develop tools to simplify the process, so anyone could get these benefits without needing to spend tons of time building and maintaining their own routines.
What I did combine my experience as a hypnotherapist and knowledge of visualization techniques to create audio programs that take the guess work out of developing a effective pre and post game routines.
